People First is an independent customer-led organisation that has worked in Cumbria for over 25 years. We have a deep understanding of the area, our communities and the unique challenges of this region.
People First was founded almost 30 years ago; our original focus was on providing self advocacy groups and empowering people with learning difficulties to gain confidence in a supportive setting. Since our foundation, we have helped to set up a self advocacy network across Cumbria and in 2009 joined together to form a single voice in the form of People First Independent Advocacy.
Since the founding of People First Independent Advocacy, we have continued to provide self advocacy groups across Cumbria; as well as expanding the range and scope of our work. We now provide a broad range of work with people from across Cumbria, including: Independent Advocacy Services, Young People First services (for young people with learning difficulties), Mental Health drop-ins, Best Life Wellbeing Programme, The Hospitality Academy, The Centre for Learning and Healthwatch Cumbria.
In more recent years, we have expanded our reach across the North of England, working alongside other third sector and advocacy organisations, and most recently we have been commissioned to deliver the Healthwatch Lancashire project; bringing the voice of the public to those who run our health and social care services. Going forward, we aim to continue to develop our presence in Lancashire and beyond.
Over the past 30 years People First has seen a large amount of change both in the projects we provide and in the world in which we operate. Throughout all of this change however, we continue to remain independent and driven by our mission and goals of putting people at the heart of what we do.
We have always been, and will continue to be, the independent organisation where people matter.
